There was a gold crest lek in my garden this morning (south ceredigion). They danced and flicked their tails for half an hour or so, oblivious of me. In case you can’t see it, the third one is prostrating itself on the top of the stone.
The first waves of Redwing are pouring across Ceredigion. Soon they will remember our centuries old garden yew and see that it is stuffed with ripeness. Then the spectacle starts proper as our resident Mistle & Song Thrushes desperately try to defend the tree. “We were here first! These are all ours!”
Daniel’s Highland cows have been coming up to our back gate at Dolfawr lately. These are curious beasts and we’ve had to push them back out of the garden several times, and later evict them from the yard by the pole barn. It’s not so much as they were seeking food, more like they just had to see for themselves what was there.

Had these two plastic cups followed their intended life they might have spent the last 25 years in a landfill site. As it was, they were retrieved by us and have spent all this time as a nursery – mostly for broad-bean seedlings. Their time, though, is clearly up. They can no longer hold themselves together let alone the humus and root of a burgeoning vegetable crop. So this is their retirement day. Thank you plastic cups. Farewell. You may now take your chances in the recycling bin. And below, further evidence of overwork of single-use plastic.
