of Film & Video Maker as editor/writer/graphic artist/page-layout etc. Just this morning “put-to-bed”. That train-driver is actually standing in a 1:19 scale garden railway. All clever smoke and mirrors stuff. And probably green screens.

The cover of the October 2026 edition of Film & Video Maker Magazine. Featuring a man riding in a model train engine.

Stay Tuned

The heat death of the universe

Around 8 o’clock on a Tuesday
75 trillion years from now
entropy will be complete
Thermodynamic equilibrium.
Nothing interesting will ever happen again.
The last photon will give up its glow.
We must be ready.
Meanwhile keep an eye on this point
And await further instructions.

My 21st edition as editor, graphic designer and general putter-togetherer of this fine print magazine is now about to land on doormats across the UK and the world.

Congratulations to Peter F. from Wem, Shropshire for correctly identifying the deliberate error as the magazine rolled over from 2025 to 2026 but the year on the cover didn’t. As a test for our reader’s observation skills, we like to drop in at least one error, be it typo or factual with every issue. This is the first time we’ve taken this competition to the front cover.

Peter’s prize of a round of applause from the entire FVM editorial team will be issued this Thursday evening just after the Archers. Sorry, but entries for this issue are now closed

Cover of the February 2026 edition of Film & Video Maker magazine. Shows a cartoon cutout of a ballroom dancing couple from an animator's board.

Financial Times

It’s a special kind of person that makes it into the pages of the Financial Times I always say loudly to myself. And to anyone else who will listen. Or who can’t get away from me quick enough.

Distributing T.C.’s book finally, after two years of effort. It looks, reads and feels fabulous.

Produced simultaneously along with the BIAFF 24 brochure, (see previous post. 40 pages of great film-making interest. This was my 10th issue since taking the combined editor/layout artist/typesetter/producer’s job. All that artwork and with a column of my own in there it ticks a lot of the creative boxes for me.

FVM Magazine #2

My second issue of FVM magazine landed on subscribers’ doormats this very morning. Mine as in editor, design, layout, typesetter and contributor.

A scoop here too as this issue features the finest cover photo of any magazine anywhere in the world at any time. Superman Harry Nicholls in a still from Kim Hopkins’ film “A Bunch of Amateurs” – a documentary about filmmaking in Bradford. It’s currently doing the film festivals – wherein it has been widely praised – and will soon be on general release.

If you’re from Bradford, you’ll want to see this.
If you’re into film-making, you’ll want to see this.
If you love quirky, slice-of-British-life documentaries, you’ll want to see this.

Ask a busy man

I wasn’t particularly looking for a job. No, I definitely wasn’t looking for a job at all. This one came looking for me. I am the new editor of FVM magazine w.e.f. pretty much immediately. I’ll also be doing the typesetting and magazine layout. Oh and writing a few articles too. Testing out nom-de-plumes as we speak.
