Immortality

Proof follows that I ever existed - at least until my subscription for this web-space runs out.

The Yetis

Was over in Co. Donegal recently. My son’s band had a gig in a local pub so captured what I could for posterity. Tom is the saxophonist.

Chimneys

Four chimneys on this house. One in each sort of wing. Two of which were letting water through. A run of fine weather, a loan of some scaffolding and the exhilaration of exposure as I stepped out on the unguarded top to finally fix them both. Cement, lime, sand, poly fibres, waterproofing admixture and it was like icing a cake. Tucked in the flashings and the odd slipped slate while I was up there and enjoyed the view of Keri’s lovely garden from this lofty altitude.

Poached Eggs

posted in: Bollocks, Nature

Whilst partaking in my customary post prandial perambulation along the rustic thoroughfare that meanders adjacent to my abode, I chanced upon a most serendipitous sight nestled amidst the verdant fringe of the lane insomuch this exquisite pair of perfectly poached eggs.

And fuck off Jacob Rees Mogg.

BIAFF 2023

The British International Amateur Film Festival. Well I was part of it this year. As indeed last year. First of all I produced the 40 page brochure – see below. And the poster. But then I also got to be a volunteer at said 3 day event. This festival is the flagship event of the IAC – Institute of Amateur Cinematographers. I even had a tee-shirt which said “Volunteer” on the back to prove it. Mine was arguably the most important role in the whole event. For it was me who pushed the “play” button to start each screening. Not only that, but I had to remember push the “pause” button too at the end of each film. So if it wasn’t for me…

Overhead Bannau Brycheiniog

posted in: Flying

Caught the last of the good-to-marginal flying weather to take a triangular trip with Gareth Writer-Davies. Followed the sharp boundary between fogged-in and clear air first to overhead the Radnor Hills and a look at Black Mixen with its impressive mast. Then, skimming the edge of the murky stuff to overfly Bannau Brycheiniog at 5,000ft+. That’s Pen y Fan in one of the pics. Back across southern Elenydd to Lampeter then over Cors Caron, Llynoedd Teifi and back to Welshpool and a cup of tea and something that rhymes with tea.

Christmas presents 2022

posted in: Countryside, Nature, Recycling

Chose to make presents this year. Mostly birdboxes, made out of recycled floor boards. This one is now in Gaynor’s garden. 28mm hole suitable for tits, sparrow, nuthatch, pied flycatcher. Or whatever might turn up in a suburb of Wrexham.

A bird box nailed to a tree in a garden. Shed beyond.

Cold Snap

Our penchant for big and draughty old building sites with history does have its downside. This is our bedroom this evening. Two nights later it showed 1°C. We were pretty miserable with it.

FVM Magazine #2

posted in: art, Films, Writing

My second issue of FVM magazine landed on subscribers’ doormats this very morning. Mine as in editor, design, layout, typesetter and contributor.

A scoop here too as this issue features the finest cover photo of any magazine anywhere in the world at any time. Superman Harry Nicholls in a still from Kim Hopkins’ film “A Bunch of Amateurs” – a documentary about filmmaking in Bradford. It’s currently doing the film festivals – wherein it has been widely praised – and will soon be on general release.

If you’re from Bradford, you’ll want to see this.
If you’re into film-making, you’ll want to see this.
If you love quirky, slice-of-British-life documentaries, you’ll want to see this.
